I Heard It Through the Grapevine

In July of 2005, New York Times reporter Judith Miller was jailed for 85 days for contempt of court, after refusing to testify before a federal grand jury investigating a leak naming Valerie Plame as a covert CIA agent.1 Ms. Miller chose to go to jail rather than divulge her source. Unlike Ms. Miller, many of us can’t wait to spread a good story, whether we are under the bounds of confidentiality or not. We rarely pause to verify the information because, after all, knowledge is power, and we want to be first to break the news. We love to tell “wow” stories and impress others with the latest bit of exclusive gossip.

You Won't Believe What I Heard About...

The following scenario, used to illustrate the principles of defamation, is compiled from facts contained in several Adventist Risk Management, Inc., files. The school board meeting of the local Christian school was almost over and everyone was tired except Buster, who sat on the edge of his seat. Soon they would discuss the Bible teacher and Buster had attended the meeting for this very purpose. How dare that Bible teacher, who was also the Pathfinder leader, fail to nominate Buster’s son as Pathfinder of the Year! Well, Buster would fix him. Buster had heard that the Bible teacher was seen coming out of a bar last Friday night and he intended to tell the board what he had heard.

Reducing Personal Liability of Board Members


The Seventh-day Adventist Church relies heavily on volunteers for all aspects of church life. Many church members selflessly serve on various church, school, and other church-related boards. Unfortunately, little thought is given to minimizing the risks of liability exposure for these well-intentioned board members. The following suggestions are intended to offer guidance and stimulate thought on reducing liability exposure.
