History of Risk Management Conferences
For 25 years the Risk Management Conference (RMC), sponsored by Adventist Risk Management, has been the primary venue for helping leaders, treasurers, health care administrators, and educators understand and effectively manage the risks inherent to the work of the Seventh-day Adventist Church and its affiliated divisions, unions, conferences, corporations, institutions and associations.
The RMC began with an attendance of about 20 church leaders in 1981, now boasts an annual attendance of more than 400 people. The range of topics addressed at the conference is as diverse as the church we serve. Litigation management, employment practices, the health hazards of mold, the dangers of 15-passenger vans, preventing and responding to fiscal impropriety, avoiding the pitfalls of underinsurance, and taming the health care cost spiral are among the issues examined at recent conferences.
The success of these domestic conferences, as well as the expanding needs of the world church prompted Adventist Risk Management to sponsor the International Risk Management Conference (IRMC) in the summer of 2002. Now in its third year, IRMC also helps international leaders within the Seventh-day Adventist Church understand and manage risks, with emphasis on the varying challenges that arise in diverse global environments.
This year, we celebrate 25 years of risk management education in the Seventh-day Adventist Church. It has been a successful journey. Our schools are much safer, churches are more aware of exposures, and our leaders are increasingly placing risk management issues at the top of their agendas. But the journey is not over. As we look ahead, we will continue to promote risk management education through our conferences, seminars, workers’ meetings, and one-on-one contact with our clients. After 25 years, our mission remains the same—providing solutions to minimize risks.
